Christmas down under

We have finally plucked up the courage to fly long haul with O for the first time and are going to spend Christmas in Adelaide with the in-laws. Having gotten over my nerves about the flight, I was starting to look forward to the prospect. Hitting Boomer beach, lunch at the Flying Fish, taking O to feed kangaroos and pet Koalas in Clelland Park, wandering down Norwood Parade for gelati and iced coffees, buying goodies from the Central Markets, barbecues, lots of lovely Barossa valley wine and just generally chilling out in my in-laws newly renovated lovely house and garden. Not to mention catching up with our favourite, favourite friends Nick, Sheree and Jack.

But then we took a trip to Austravel, and horrors of horrors my favourite airline, Singapore, is fully booked already! I am quite a nervous flyer, but have had so many good flights with them, I would have felt really reassured that flying with them would make O's maiden long haul flight as comfortable as it could be. Argh, what to do! It's looking like we are going to have to go with Malaysia. We've flown them before, and they were ok, service not quite up to Singapore, food not as good but not bad. My main beef was that the planes were older and a bit tatty. And they didn't have on-demand tv. The travel review sites do still award them a 5 star ranking, and the customer reviews aren't bad. But I'd still rather we were able to spend our money with Singapore!

Does anyone out there have any recent experiences of Malaysia long haul? Or any tips on long haul with pre-schoolers?

We flew UK to Aus twice with Qantas and it was fine but have never done Malaysian I'm afraid. I can't say any long haul flight I've been on (we've done Singapore, Qantas, Canadian) has been good, but we've survived them all! I'm sure it will be fine, try not to worry, I'm sure they're someone elses favourite. How nice that you'll be out this way!

Well done. I've only ever travelled on Qantas long-haul so can't advise you.

Would it be wrong to drug your pre-schooler for the flight?!

So lovely to discover your blog - and to hear you are coming to Aus too! Have a little bit of advice on books for entertaining toddlers on my blog, if you are interested: http://weheartbooks.com/2008/05/20/books-for-travelling-with-kids/
But looks as though you are very good at this already!!! I will be back!

Hey Lesley, no worries about Chesil Beach - I'm not great at getting emails back either. But thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. Hey and let me know what dates and where in Adelaide you will be, as we have a wedding there just before Christmas and so will be in town. Maybe catch up for a coffee? Sam

I can't believe I wrote Lesley and not Lindsay. So sorry, bit of brain fade happening there. x Sam

Spooky! We're going to NZ for Christmas 2009 (managed to avoid it this year thanks to expensive house renovation). I've travelled long haul with my pre-school kids loads though and the thing that really works is drugging them. I use Piriton but check it with a trial run before take off as some kids go hyperactive, instead of sedate. It takes 60-90 mins to work sometimes too. (Btw I'm not generally a "lazy" mother - I don't like to use medicine unless absolutely necessary but there's nothing worse than an over tired, distressed toddler on a flight!)
